Library: How to Find a Call # in the Stacks

.

Finding a Call # in the Stacks

University libraries use Library of Congress call numbers, as opposed to Dewey Decimal call numbers which are found in public libraries and most high school libraries. These call numbers can be confusing because they contain letters and numbers and decimal numbers.

The letters at the top are arranged alphabetically:

A AC AG AZ B BC BT

Books having the same letter(s) on the top line are distinguished by the numbers that follow, shelved numerically:

FC

FC

200

2113

If those lines are the same, the books are distinguished by the letters that follow, which are shelved alphabetically.

If those lines are identical, the next numbers are arranged decimally (not numerically).

Sometimes a call number will have a fourth line which contains a letter and number(s). The letter in this line is arranged alphabetically, while the numbers are arranged decimally.
