PHL 337: Ethics

International Beauvoir scholars and renowned feminist phenomenologists from North America and Europe offer a unique look at one of the most outstanding existential-philosophical studies on age and aging. Women and Gender in Jewish Philosophy is the first systematic attempt to interpret the Jewish philosophical tradition in light of feminist philosophy and to engage feminist philosophy from the perspective of Jewish philosophy. The book demonstrates that no analysis of Jewish philosophy can be adequate without attention to gender categories. The essays cover the Jewish philosophic tradition from Philo, Maimonides, and Levinas, and rethink the subdisciplines of Jewish philosophy.

The book discusses topics such as the family and medical leave act considered in light of the social organization of dependency work and gender equality, caring (f)or justice for people with disabilities, public health care policies, combat exclusion and the role of women in the military, unwed fathers' rights and sex equality and other social concerns.

Diprose argues that the usual approaches to ethics both perpetuate and remain blind to the mechanisms of the subordination of women. Diprose analyses feminist and non-feminist ethics to recognize the role of sexual difference and the biomedical discourses whose descriptions mask a constitution and regulation of the 'body'. She draws on insights from Irigaray, Cornell and Fraser, Hegel, Nietzsche, Merleau-Ponty, Derrida and Foucault.
