Career Development Resources: Experiental Learning

Experiential learning is an essential part of the Redeemer experience. It enables you to take theories learned in the classroom and apply them in a variety of “real world” settings. Not only will this benefit your education, it will also help you in planning and preparing for your career. That’s why Redeemer incorporates a variety of experiential learning opportunities—co-operative education, internships, practicums, and off-campus study programs—directly into our academic programs.

Experience Enhanced Learning

Internships

Receive academic credit for internships in local or global organizations. These practical, hands-on experiences are designed to help prepare you for a future career. They are required or optional courses in many majors. During internship placements, you are mentored by both your placement supervisor and a Redeemer instructor. For more about internships, view the Academic Calendar.

Community Service Learning

By meaningful, reflective service in the community, CSL students are serving to learn, and learning to serve. Hamilton is a diverse city with unique needs and opportunities; for over 25 years, Redeemer students have been making a positive impact in various lower-city Hamilton communities. There are many ways to get involved and make a difference in the diverse communities that surround Redeemer. Our students get involved with ministries to refugees, street-involved populations, or at-risk youth; the opportunities are endless!

Community Engagement in Hamilton allows you to:

  • Meet and understand those with different experiences.
  • Live out your faith through word and action.
  • Meet others who also want to make a difference.
  • Gain valuable work experience and meet potential employers.

Co-op and Internship Testimonials

Ruilin Amos Liang - Business Honours Accounting - WBM Partners LLP

This Co-op gave me a better understanding of the accounting field. It helped me realize how financial information can play a crucial role in decision making.

As a staff accountant at WBM Partners LLP, I engaged in various activities such as performing bookkeeping tasks for clients, preparing tax returns, and compiling financial statements. I also supported my colleagues by ensuring the mathematical accuracy of the financial statements. This Co-op also strengthened my desire to pursue a career in accounting since it helped me discover my passion for assisting clients in achieving financial well-being.

Michelle Visser - Business Honours Management - Rosa Flora Limited

My Co-op experience has opened my eyes up to a world of opportunity by challenging me to creatively problem-solve alongside my co-workers.

At Rosa Flora Ltd, a premium flower grower, I facilitate international trade through arranging floral shipments to the US. The constant growth mindset of Rosa Flora has challenged me to think critically and work with other to consistently improve in every area of operations. I relocated for this job, and one of the biggest rewards of my experience has been the interpersonal relationships-being embraced and invested in by the people in my workplace, as well as my new community. Moving was an opportunity to grow personally and professionally by getting me outside of my comfort zone, expanding my network and developing useful career skills.

Mayita Caiza - Honours Urban and Intercultural Ministry - Wesley urban Ministries

This Co-op stimulated my mind to thinking deeper about social issues and justice. My experience changed what I thought I wanted for my future "career"

At Wesley I supported individuals who had been homeless through a case management approach. The goal was to help participants maintain their housing and achieve an ideal quality of life through developing plans, enhancing life skills, addiction management, and addressing mental health needs. The people I worked for and the people I worked with taught me that "humanity" is fragile and broken, but that in the midst of it there is a lot of hope and people that truly care. It impacted me greatly in all ways of life and taught me a lot about homelessness and it broke the stigmas.

Stephen Goosen - Business Honours Marketing - Jetport

My Jetport Co-op confirmed my desire to be involved in the aviation industry, but it also opened my eyes to see other possibilities in connecting my passion for aviation with business.

Jetport, one of Canada's top aircraft management and charter service providers, is a fairly small company, allowing me to be involved in almost all aspects of the business and take on all kinds of responsibilities! Thanks to my Co-op, being able to utilize concepts that I learned in my accounting, management and marketing classes and apply them in the real world has been a true blessing. As an aspiring airline pilot, I've connected with so many amazing people that could help my career.

Co-op Opportunities

Business Accounting Co-op

Studies in accounting will include recording financial transactions; preparing financial statements; measuring the costs of products, services and activities; determining whether a business should undertake investments in product improvements, equipment, and facilities; analyzing the performance of a business against its goals; and projecting the financial impact of contemplated business decisions. This Co-operative Education program is also accredited by CPA Ontario. Co-operative Education students in the Accounting stream will graduate with a 4-year B.B.A. or an Honours B.B. A. degree having completed 16 months of work-integrated learning in their third and fourth years.

Studying Management at Redeemer will prepare students to assume a diverse range of responsibilities in a business or not-for-profit organization and to progress towards senior management positions. This program gives you a balanced coverage of courses across all business disciplines to ensure that you are prepared and have the skills for all services that may be required in management positions. A Biblical framework grounds your education and encourages you to live out your faith in the workplace through practices that honour Christ, customers, colleagues, and competitors. Co-operative Education students in the Management stream will graduate with a 4-year B.B.A. or an Honours B.B.A. degree having completed 16 months of work-integrated learning in their third and fourth years.

Marketing is central to any business and an integral part of everyone’s life. We all market our ideas, skills, and experience whatever our calling. The challenge for a marketer is to understand and satisfy the needs of your customers better than your competitors, develop and execute a clear and compelling marketing strategy, all in a God-honouring way. This is a unique challenge for marketers in a culture where the workforce can be primarily profit-oriented, using methods that peddle self-indulgence. Your studies will push you to think deeply about the ethics behind these relationships and will include assignments in market research, brand management, pricing, communications (advertising, sales promotion and public relations), e-marketing and retail channel management. Co-operative Education students in the Marketing stream will graduate with a 4-year B.B.A. or an Honours B.B.A. degree having completed sixteen months of work-integrated learning in their third and fourth years.

Building on a foundation in business and economics as well as an understanding of the unique aspects of the not-for-profit sector, students are prepared for a diverse range of responsibilities and management roles. They bring broad analytical skills in key areas of business — marketing, accounting, and management. Qualifying Business Program students entering the Not-For-Profit Management stream at Redeemer University have met rigorous internal requirements, including minimum grade standards. They will be graduated with a 4-year B.B.A. or an Honours B.B.A. degree having completed 16 months of work-integrated learning in their third and fourth years.

Life can be demanding as we seek a balance of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Kinesiology students understand human movement for sport, recreation, fitness, and health. They focus comprehensive and advanced knowledge from the human sciences, through a lens of critical thinking. With two streams, B.A. and BSc., students are looking to careers in sports management, therapeutics, and medical science. These students have met rigorous internal requirements, including minimum grade standards. They will graduate with a 4-year B.A. or an Honours B.A. degree having completed sixteen months of work-integrated learning in their third and fourth years.

In an increasingly globalized world, it is imperative to develop the capacity to learn from, work with and appreciate different cultures and perspectives. In both intercultural and urban contexts, students will learn what it means to announce, demonstrate, and embody the good news of the Kingdom of God, resulting in the transformation and flourishing of communities. By learning to understand our cultural formation and how it can both help and hinder meaningful ministry, the Urban and Intercultural Ministry program will help students gain awareness, as well as the necessary tools, to serve effectively in churches, ministries, and community organizations. Co-operative Education students in the Urban and Intercultural Ministry Program will graduate with a 4-year Honours B.A. degree having completed 16 months of work-integrated learning in their third and fourth years.
