Career Development Resources: Job Interviews

Interviewing for a job can be a stressful time but it can also be exciting as you enter a new branch of your career. When you make it to the interviewing process for the job you have been searching for, make sure to congratulate yourself as the hard work has paid off. Now it is time to prepare for a great interview.

Types of Interviews

An individual interview is usually the most common interview you will find yourself in. During an individual interview, it will just be you and whomever has been assigned the interviewing position. This could be the direct manager of the open position, an HR manager, or a supervisor of the role. No matter who it is, it is important to act in a professional manner and make the most of the time you have in the interview.

A panel interview can be one of the more intimidating structures of an interview, but with appropriate preparation and research it can be the perfect time to prove yourself to the organization. The "panel" will be made up of usually 3-5 individuals who have a direct connection to the role that is being interviewed for. This may include an HR representative, the manager of the department, a supervisor of the role, and possibly even a regional manager. During the interview, it is important to give each panel member your focus and to not focus only on the most senior member. Be sure to follow the link above to learn more tips on how to nail a panel interview.

A group interview means that there will be other candidates in the interview with you. Now this can be daunting as it is much more difficult to stand out while being interviewed among the other candidates. It is likely that you will only have the opportunity to answer a 2-3 questions so it is important to make those answers count.

Face-to-Face interviews are the perfect opportunity to prove to your potential to your potential employer. This is where your composure really matters. The organization you are interviewing for has taken time out of their day to explore the possibility of you being hired onto the team. The last thing you want to do is waste their time and yours. In order to take advantage of this opportunity you must be diligent with your answers to their questions and to act professionally and polite throughout the entirety of the interview. Be sure to check out the link above for tips on how to have an excellent Face-to-Face interview.

A Live Video Interview is quite similar to the Face-to-Face interview with a few exceptions. One of the most important exceptions is that body language cannot be portrayed as effectively over a video call. Due to this reality, it is even more important to portray your attitude and positivity through the tone of your voice and your facial expressions. It can be very easy to simply answer the interview questions without any personality behind the answer. However, this is the exact opposite of what the interviewer is looking for in the right candidate. Interviewers are looking for individuals who are passionate about everything they say during an interview. It is important to focus on the tone of your voice and your positive attitude throughout the entirety of the interview.

A Pre-recorded video interview is a lot different than any other type of interview. This is due to the fact that there will be no interviewer present for the interview. Instead, you will be given a set of pre-decided questions that you must answer within a pre-determined time frame. As with any interview, it is important to keep a professional composure throughout. It may be tempting to let your composure slide due to there not being an interviewer present, but this is exactly what the hiring manager will be looking out for when they watch the interview video. One of the biggest advantages to the Pre-recorded video interview is that you will most likely receive the questions well before the interview date. Make sure to go through the interview questions diligently before the interview and practice your answers in front of someone so they can give you feedback.

Although phone interviews are quite rare, it is still important to be prepared for them. One very important step to remember when you are conducting a phone interview is to smile when answering questions. Even though the interviewer will not be able to see you, the tone of your voice will be everything they are focusing on. While smiling, your tone of voice is light and it sounds like you are enjoying the conversation. The same goes for posture. Sitting or standing up straight will allow your voice to sound clear and professional. Even though the interviewer cannot see you, all these things will affect your tone of voice.

Job Interview Etiquette

Now that you have secured an interview, it is important to pay very close attention to the etiquette that is expected of you during the interview. A lack of proper etiquette for the interview at hand will most likely lead to someone else getting the position. The interview is your final chance to prove to the potential employer that you are indeed the right candidate for the position. Your resume and cover letter can get you a long way, but the manner in which you compose yourself during the interview will make or break the opportunity. Be sure to check out the link above for Job Interview Etiquette tips.

Sample Interview Questions

As you prepare for an upcoming job interview it is important to practice. Not only will it be a smoother interview if you practice your answers to some common questions, but if you hone your interviewing skills it will be an asset to the entirety of your career. It is important to practice your answers out loud and in front of a mirror so you can understand how your tone of voice and body language are affected. If you find yourself stumbling on your words, just slow things down. Take your time to think about your answer before speaking. Make sure to focus on your posture as well as this is a simple way to either come off as professional and excited or lazy and uninterested.
