ENG 257 British Novel: Primary Sources

Find primary sources by using the library catalogue. Be specific or very general.

Primary sources are sources that were written by the author or others at the time, which shed light on the literary text.

Use the library catalogue to find primary sources that have been published in book format:

Use JSTOR to find sources written during the author's lifetime.

Charles Dickens lived from 1812 to 1870.  He wrote Great Expectations in weekly installments from December 1860 to August 1861.

On the library website, go to the Databases page and select JSTOR (Advanced Search) and search for "Charles Dickens" (as a phrase) in publications from 1860 until his death in 1870, in order to learn how he was received by the public, particularly in the United States.
